ATM Safety Tips

Your personal safety while conducting transactions at an ATM depends largely on the safety steps you follow. By raising your awareness we hope to make you a partner in our continuing efforts to provide a safe and secure environment.

General

  • Commit your PIN to memory. Do not write it on your card or keep your card and any written record of your PIN in the same location.
  • Never share your PIN (Personal Identification Number) or give it out over the telephone, even if the caller identifies himself as your financial representative or a police officer.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night.
  • Consider having someone accompany you when the automated teller machine is used after dark.
  • Consider using another automated teller machine or coming back later if you notice anything suspicious. If you are in the middle of a transaction and you notice something suspicious, cancel the transaction, pocket your card and leave.
  • Refrain from displaying your cash. Pocket it as soon as your transaction is completed. Count the cash later in the safety of your car or home.
  • Report all crimes to law enforcement officials immediately.

Walk-Up

  • Have your card ready and in hand, along with other transaction materials, before you approach an ATM.
  • Stand close to the ATM when entering your PIN. Do not allow anyone to watch.
  • It is appropriate to politely ask someone who is uncomfortably close to you to step back before you complete your transaction.
  • Go to the nearest public area where people are located, if you are followed after making a transaction.

Drive-Up

  • Pull up close to the ATM
  • Keep your car running while operating the ATM
  • Remain in your car while conducting your ATM transaction. For added security, keep car doors locked and windows rolled up before and after making your transaction
